Which Autism Book is Best for You? Verbal Behavior Approach or Turn Autism Around?
Dr. Mary Barbera discusses her two best selling autism books and goes over which is best for you.
💻 Free workshop to help young children increase talking, decrease tantrums, and improve picky eating, sleeping, potty training and more: bit.ly/3GZjn7m
In today’s episode, I’ll be diving into a topic that’s very close to my heart: my two bestselling books on autism, “The Verbal Behavior Approach” and “Turn Autism Around.” I’ll be sharing the unique strengths and insights each book offers, discussing their differences, and helping you determine which autism book might be the best fit for your needs.
There are books written by professionals like me, designed to help you support your children. There are books written by autism moms and dads sharing their experiences raising kids with autism and there will be autism books written by autism self-advocates that can help give us insight into what they experience navigating life with autism.
My books on autism are unique because I am both a parent and professional. I understand the importance of getting crucial, helpful information out there, but I also believe in making it readable to professionals but also to parents who may need it the most!

    ok so basically, i’ve been suspecting i have autism AND adhd and this is why. Talking: I don’t like talking to people i don’t know as in like as if i’m talking to a teacher i just met or i’m at the doctors or something that had to deal with talking in general, but when i’m with close friends i feel like i couldn’t stop talking and had to feel like i needed to talk Stimming: I’ve been stimming a lot over things i like (sharks, dinosaurs, my favorite shows, etc) but i’ve also been stimming at stuff i don’t like or stuff that makes me feel disgusted or makes me feel unstable. Like if i do the dishes sometimes i’ll be really disgusted and i’ll start stimming and whining and sometimes i’d start jumping to. Normal actions: I fidget a lot, normally and when i get anxiety. I’d start playing with my hair or i’d start playing with my hands. What i don’t like: I don’t like loud noises, my ears are really sensitive so when i hear loud noises i get overly obnoxious and i start stimming. When i hear loud noises i’ll get a headache that’ll last for a long time. Hints: People have been telling me that i’ve been having signs of autism, and i’ve been seeing signs, so now i’m trying to figure it out.

    I need advice. My gf nephew is stage 3 ASD. He and his mother have been staying with us due to her boyfriend, who is her brother, passing away. He has his days where we will whine for no apparent reason. He’s nonverbal, but I heard him only say two words, “no” and “hey.” I got frustrated because he whined when I tried to sleep after work. I feel he does the whinnying because he wants attention. Is there anything I can do to handle this situation better? I know my girlfriend cares about him dearly. I care about him dearly as well. I suggested getting him some picture books and starting to read to him. He only wants to watch UA-cam, which is not a good idea. From researching, I think he’s having sensory overload from the content. I noticed he would laugh if someone got hurt or something terrible happened. He recently started walking and kicking the door open. He was trying to bite his brother, and he tried biting me as well. How can I handle this behavior? This is new to me and has been an adjustment for me. Do you have any advice?

    To tell you the truth coming from experience. Do not I repeat do not give in so easily to your kid with autism. We as parents have to be extra strict with kids with autism because they are clever and very smart. And once you give in to the tamtrum they will keep acting with tantrums because you give in to that! Start going out with your kids and get some Vitamin D! A lot of people don't go out with their kids with spectrum because they care what other people think and some unfortunately are ashamed because their kids act like that! But let me tell you God made us beautiful and unique in different ways! And consider your kid as an extra blessing and God never makes mistakes! So be grateful that your kids are the way they are! And if you really need help look for videos and seek professional help! But before you do check their reviews first! Happy seeking and always think positive because life is too short!

    Hi, Dr. Barbera. I hope you can assist me. We have a client with Autism and ADHD who has a history of physical aggression and was recently hospitalized due to aggressive behavior. Lately, we've noticed that he seeks attention in the community and becomes aggressive (e.i. biting, kicking, throwing) when he doesn't get his way. This often leads to an emergency use of manual restraint (EUMR) to prevent an imminent risk. When he's escalating, he doesn't respond to redirection, and in his previous placements, he had at least 200 EUMRs in 3 months. As a lead staff member, I'm trying to convey to our management the importance of teaching the client the difference between rewards and consequences. Currently, management focuses only on rewarding him and overlooks the consequences of his negative actions. During EUMRs, most of the staff members end up getting injured. It's frustrating, but I'm determined to find a solution because I'm concerned about the safety of the staff, the client, and the community. I want to help this client, and the safety of everyone involved is a top priority.

    • @marybarbera
      @marybarbera 8 днів тому

      Ultimately, we want to prevent these behaviors from happening. Reduce demands and increase reinforcement and take data on when it doesn't happen..we don't want to escalate to points of restraint if possible. I do have some resources in my online course related to this www.marybarbera.com/workshops

    I would recommend two excellent books that I read over the past year: "Chose Wonder Over Worry" by Amber Rae & " Teen Violence in America, How Do We Keep Our Children Safe?" by James Kolb. Mr. Kolb in his book stated that an IEP for a disabled student relates to academic goals only. Many children and teenagers would be helped: What do I do if an older child is teasing me about my disability when they on the playground or in the city park. In the past, some people were taught to deal with anger by punching a pillow or manakin doll- preceding shows aggression, activates the fight flight response and releases cortisol- stress hormone. Better way to handle anger: Slow down therapy, jumping jacks/push ups no more than your age, technique: " positive connotation"- need a third party- individual or group for this to work, music, leave scene, go somewhere safe & do art/write therapy etc. All emotions when recognized are trying to teach us. John Doe starts having a headache & leaves work early. Mr. Doe has headaches over the weekend and 2 sons are camping with Boy Scouts. His wife tells her husband to call the family doctor Monday morning. As of Thursday, she learns her husband Mr. Doe has not called the family doctor. What could be the reason for his procrastination? Answer: Fear- could the headaches he is having be diagnosed as a brain tumor? Also for children, teenagers and young adults, the issue of Perfectionism. A female author, name unknown, book title not remembered, change the word "perfect" to the word: "excellent". " I'm going to write a perfect essay for school" changes to: " I will write an excellent essay for school". For students that receive 100% on a test or quiz- change " I got a perfect score" to: " I aced the test". About fear of failure: in the 1700's a man's project failed his plan however due to that failure air conditioning started and around 1924, a 12 year old boy forgot to clean up outside porch. Temperatures dropped below freezing and leftover soda had a stick in it to stir sugar into the soda and that is how the Popsicle started.

    What type of dr. Will his primary refer him to? My 4 yr old will mostly repeat what he hears. Also, screams alit. The school will do an extensive test.

    I know a person in mind who is 13 and still scripts certain shows like Peppa Pig and Cocomelon, it still hasn't stopped and yet I still have to deal with it.

    Thank you. My son is 4 and he’s borderline about to be kicked out of daycare even with having a RBT. The daycare let him go a week barefoot not he’s refusing to keep his shoes on
